Melbourne is the capital and the most populated city in Victoria. It is actually the second most populated city in Australia, next to Sydney. It is located in the south east of Australia. The city was founded in 1835 by free settlers and flourished during the gold rush of the 1850.

Transport

People from Melbourne are highly dependent on the automobile for transport especially in the suburban areas where the most number of cars are bought.
For the public, the city of Melbourne has the biggest tram network in the world. This tram network is known as the Metlink. Visitors are usually given a free ride of the City Circle Tram so that they can see the beautiful city sights. Restaurant trams are also the first of their kind in the world.

Some of the oldest universities in Australia are found in Melbourne. The University of Melbourne is the second oldest university as well as one of the largest. Monash University is also another of the largest universities found in the city. The other universities are La Trobe, RMIT, Deakin, Swinburne, Victoria and Australia Catholic University. Over the years, there has been an increase of international students in the universities in Melbourne and this has been attributed to the increasing number of places being made available to full fee paying students.

Melbourne sports capital of Australia

The sports capital of Australia is said to be in Melbourne. The city actually hosts many major sporting events such as the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival which features the Melbourne Cup, the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, Australian Open Tennis Championship and the AFL Grand Final. Cricket is also held at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground.


Australian Rules Football and Cricket are the most popular sports in Melbourne.
The city is also home to nine of the sixteen teams of the Australian Football League.
