BOXES & PACKING

There are many options when searching for packing boxes to assist in your moving needs.  You can hire, purchase new or new obsolete (seconds) boxes or purchase used boxes.  Consider recycling boxes to help the environment and produce less waste.  Many removal and packaging companies will collect your empty used boxes at the completion of the move and give a refund for boxes in good condition.

Use only boxes of strong quality and construction.  Some moving boxes are made from strong virgin cardboard to resist moisture absorption if  items are to be stored for a longer period of time.

Removal boxes come in a large variety of sizes.  Boxes designed to stack evenly together make packing the truck quicker and easier.

Small boxes should be used for heavy items such as books, DVDs, CDs, cutlery and utensils.   Never pack heavy items in large boxes as they are too heavy to carry and risk collapsing or tearing.

Medium size boxes are used for the contents of wardrobe drawers, kitchen cupboards,  small appliances, ornaments and toys.

Large packaging boxes should only be used for lightweight bulky items such as fans, electrical equipment, stuffed toys, quilts, etc

Portable Wardrobe boxes have a bar for hanging coat hangers.  This means there is no need to waste time and effort folding your hung garments.

Other boxes available are specifically shaped for picture frames with foam inserts; file boxes for folders; achieve boxes; wine bottles with dividers; glasses and dishes with stacking dividers; extra large boxes for TVs, stereos and microwaves.  Not all companies will have these specially designed boxes available.

Plastic furniture covers are available in varying sizes for mattresses, chairs,  lounges, lamp, rugs and tables.  The covers keeps the furniture clean, scratch and dust free and protects from moisture if moving on a rainy day. Covers and bags are also available in a range of sizes for clothing, computer equipment, quilts and rugs.  Space bags allow you to vaccum the air out of the bag to take up a lot less space.   Space bags are also available at department and specialty stores.  For those who are do-it-yourself removalists, blankets are available to protect furniture, mattresses and large unwrapped items. Most companies that supply packing/ removal boxes will also supply packaging materials such as butcher’s paper, tape, tape guns, labels, marking pens, bubble wrap, air pillows and other fill products.

Tips:

* Always tape the bottom of the box first.

* Leave approximately 3cms (1 inch) at the top of the box as the space   cushions fragile items when another box is placed on top.

* Use packets and cardboard containers from the pantry between glass jars and bottles.

* Wrap every second bottle to ensure no breakages

* Fill empty spaces with paper or cloths.

* Ensure all jars are sealed and standing upright

* Always label each box correct way up.  Label which room the box is to be delivered to and the contents of the box.   Detailed labelling with save much time and confusion.
